An English speaking music group for the under 5’s and their carers in Madrid. Each week we sing, play instruments and dance using guitars and percussion to learn about rhythm and music. The classes are fun, energetic and varied and take place in a dance studio where we have plenty of space to move to, and enjoy, different types of music. Older children’s appreciation of music is stimulated in various ways including singing traditional nursery rhymes, singing with live accompaniment, games with rhythm and movement. Younger children and babies benefit from this early exposure to live music & singing, joining in with actions, playing with percussion and moving rhythmically with their caregiver. The group is run by AmyJo, a qualified Early Years teacher for 8 years and also an English language teacher, musician and songwriter. She has enlisted the help of guest musicians including a saxophonist a drummer and a ukulele player.
Each session starts with a welcome song and a well known nursery rhyme, brought to life with cardboard cut outs. We then play rhythm games which are designed to help the little ones pick up and hold a beat - the first skill in learning music or dance. There are plenty of shakers, bells and other percussion instruments available for everybody to join in with the rhythm. The main part of the session is a sing-a-long with the guitar with a mix of the traditional children's songs and adaptations of adult songs - expect to find yourself singing along to the music from Oliver or The Beatles as well as the Wheels on the Bus and other favourites. We change the pace with an important part of the session, storytime. Each story is carefully chosen for its metre or subject and helps to teach the little ones about rhythm in speech. Here the children can meet Gerald in Giraffes Can't Dance and enjoy some Dr Seuss. And we finish with everyone up on their feet. Enjoyment of music and rhythm can be learned from movement and it's a great way to bond with your child, so get dancing!. The sessions are held in a dance studio and we use the space to move to everything from famous musical songs to the latest in the pop chart, whatever is great to dance to.
The sessions are for 45 minutes every Wednesday at 5.00 pm. Each session costs just €7 on the day or €5 if paid in advance (20€ pass for 4 classes valid for 6 weeks, Mondays or Fridays).
